Decision-making is both a science and an art. In life, we constantly face choices, trade-offs, and uncertainties. A thoughtful approach helps us avoid drifting aimlessly and instead navigate with clarity.

Why do I say that?

Decision-making involves studying the present state, identifying the desired state, and evaluating possible outcomes. It is an art that requires recognizing opportunities, thinking rationally, and distinguishing between reality and illusion.

Business leaders, for example, often face competition, market uncertainties, and the conflicting expectations of stakeholders (customers, partners, employees, owners, and society). Their responsibility is to make decisions that create value for stakeholders while withstanding external uncertainties.

What is SWOT?

SWOT analysis is a framework that encourages us to consider both internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats, before making decisions. Traditionally, it is used by business leaders to assess an organization’s current position and make informed strategic choices.

  • Strengths: Internal factors that give an organization a competitive advantage.

  • Weaknesses: Internal shortcomings or limitations that delay or hinder success.

  • Opportunities: External factors the organization can leverage, also known as “tailwinds.”

  • Threats: External, uncontrollable factors that may negatively impact growth or overall business performance.

You Are the CEO of Your Life

Too often, people take their careers, decisions, and even life itself for granted, drifting like an abandoned ship. But the truth is, you are the CEO of your life. Every day, you are presented with countless choices. Your decisions have direct impact on the success and quality of your life. Even “not choosing” is still a choice, one that keeps you where you are.

Applying SWOT to our personal decisions, career moves, life goals, or transitions makes our choices more effective, pragmatic, and less risky.

Before doing a SWOT analysis, check whether your goals are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). If not, refine them until they are as SMART as possible.

  • Strengths: Identify your unique qualities, resources, skills, networks, or knowledge that give you an edge in reaching your goals.

Ask yourself: What do people often come to me for? What skills or traits have consistently helped me succeed?

  • Weaknesses: Acknowledge the qualities, habits, knowledge gaps, or resource constraints that may slow you down or hold you back.

A quick way to spot weaknesses is to notice the tasks you tend to avoid or postpone—they often highlight areas you need to improve.

  • Opportunities: Look for external factors that can help you succeed; mentors, learning opportunities, emerging trends, or supportive communities.

Think about what is changing around you, new technologies, courses, mentors, or communities you can access. Write these down, even if they feel small at first.

  • Threats: Recognize what might derail you; setbacks, competition, time pressures, or external risks beyond your control.

Consider what external factors could realistically block your path, time, finances, or even unexpected life events. Naming them early helps you prepare better.

Conduct the SWOT analysis thoroughly and honestly, not based on wishful thinking. Once you fill your grid, pick one item from each box and write a simple step you can take today, for example, use a strength to chase an opportunity, or make one move to reduce a weakness. This way, SWOT doesn’t just stay on paper, it turns into action that moves you forward.
